ON ETERNAL SECURITY
By Adesanwo Damilola
I want to thank God for the privilege to write on this controversial and very important topic spreading in this generation. I really want you to open your heart to receive this truth.
There are two subject matter I would like to discuss on in this topic:
I believe every believer accepts the truth that eternal life is in Christ Jesus. The word “eternal” means ‘unending’ or ‘endless’. The life Christ gave us through His death is an endless life. Take it or leave it, the life of Christ that indwells every believer is eternal. One important question now is: what brought up the issue of eternal security after accepting the fact that the life of Christ in us is eternal? The issue of eternal security came up because of some conceptions of ‘sin’: after accepting this eternal life what then is the effect of sin on me? Here comes the controversies; some says whether you continue in sin after your conversion or not, your eternal life is secured; while some believes that it is not so. As you read this article please open your heart with all sense of humility and meekness –James 1:21. This article comes as an inspiration from the Lord to the body of Christ.
Now we are going to carefully handle the subject of sin has we go on;
The power of sin has been destroyed on the cross, in the body of our Lord Jesus -Romans 6:10, and it is the death of Jesus Christ on the cross that released the grace to live above sin. We can now live a life above sin because the power of sin has been destroyed on the cross, through the death of our Lord Jesus (Romans 6:7). Everything about sin was finished on the cross when Jesus said it is FINISHED! Living a life above sin is therefore an evidence of the finished work of Christ on the cross in your life. For without the death of Christ Jesus no one has the ability to live a life above sin. We would all be slaves to sin, but thanks to God who through the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus has released unto us grace to live above the power of sin.
The grace released by Jesus gives us the power to deny all ungodliness -Titus 2:11, and not a licence to sin. I believe sin should not be a subject of controversy in the body of Christ, because Jesus has dealt with it.
If there is any man who claims to believe in Jesus, in His love, in the sacrifice of His death and still takes pleasure in sin, then I think the matter to be considered is not eternal security but the matter of salvation; i.e, he has to reconsider repentance and salvation. Anyone who is genuinely saved will have the nature of God that greatly detest sin (1 John 1:6)
Jesus gave us a commandment that we should love God with all our heart, soul and mind which is the first and the greatest commandment. I believe this should be the focus of the church and not being distracted by a controversial debate on eternal security. A man who lives his life to obey this commandment will have no issue with eternal security. Let’s not be distracted, giving room for strife in our midst. Let’s be focused on living our life to love God with all we are and have. I believe there is a more important matter the church should be concerned with; the matter of genuine love for God.
When you draw close to God with a heart to love Him and to seek His face, sin automatically loses grip on your life. Let’s not test God as the devil tested Jesus:
Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test. Matt 4:5-7(NIV)
The devil says: ‘If you’re the son of God you can sin since you already have eternal life which is not dependent on what you do or what you did not do’. This is the temptation the devil is bringing to us and it’s a pity many are falling to this. You don’t have to sin, you are no longer under the power of sin. If at all you sin, go before God asking Him for mercy and grace to help (Heb4:16). God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.
My heart cry;
Lord, I thank You for the Eternal Life You’ve given us, thank You for Your grace You’ve poured on us, the grace to live above sin. Lord I therefore pray You’ll help us to respond to Your love by choosing to love You with all that we have. Turn our attention back to our love for You. Lord please remove every distraction and deception in Your Body, this I pray in Jesus name. Amen.
